What we’ve been playing: Transformers: Fall of Cybertron

We spent a solid couple of months playing Transformers: War for Cybertron to the point of distraction so I waited a few weeks after the launch of the sequel to get it, but it was certainly worth the wait. The XBox TV input was switched to HDMI for the occasion what a treat! Its pretty clear the dedication and knowledge of the lore the development team had for this product. I found myself laughing at these excellent off hand comments the characters would toss out, obliquely referring to events from the original cartoon show and other incarnations. Peter Cullen and others return again, its great Optimus Prime has been the same voice all these years!

This is the truly epic cinematic trailer shown on Spike TV in 2011 that used Puscifier’s song The Humbling River, created by Digital Domain for Activision

In Transformers canon, this is the darkest hour of the Autobots, after the Decepticons have defeated them and the war has left their home world of Cybertron a burnt out husk of a planet. The game chronicles the events on Cybertron right before the Autobots escape to Earth. On the timeline this is right before original 80′s cartoon show begins. Here is a gameplay sequence from the Xbox 360 version, playing as the Decepticons (as with the previous Transformers game, you can play either side!)

Here’s video of the Printr Bot Jr printing out the Torus Played One Game achievement reward 3D print.

The difference between the Shapeways.com printers and this sub $500 printer is pretty clear when you see the two side by side.

The reward Torus prints from Shapeways laser sintering remain the “real” rewards. I’ll be improving the models so the text is legible when using the FDM printing method.

What we’ve been playing: Skylanders Giants!

So this has been a total blast, playing with my 6 year old son and swapping characters via the “portal” as we went through the levels. It is a kids game so the levels are not too challenging and you dont “die” but you have to take the character off the portal for a rest period. The levels are huge and richly detailed with great voice over talent and fantastic transitions when you put a character down on the portal. The portal plugs into our Xbox USB (I didn’t even know the Xbox 360 has 5 USB ports!)

The figurines store your progress and health, and they are completely cross platform, so you can take your guys to someone’s house with a PlayStation and the characters pick up where you left them on the Xbox 360 for example. The underlying technology is almost all derived from open source and 3D printing played a huge role in the creation of the characters.
